IEP is proud to support the Centre for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) in advancing its mission to protect civilians in conflict zones. In collaboration with CIVIC, IEP contributed to The Protection of Civilians Annual Trends Report, designed to complement the United Nations Secretary-General’s annual report on civilian protection.
As part of this effort, IEP produced the Civilian Protection Index, which incorporates 15 protection-related indicators to assess the civilian protection environment across 163 countries. This index aims to assist policymakers, practitioners, academics, and journalists in understanding and reversing the trend of increasing harm to civilians. IEP also developed a Conflict Media Coverage Index to evaluate the attention given by media to different conflicts and contexts of extreme violence.
The report provides high-level recommendations for states, the UN Security Council, UN peacekeeping missions, and regional organisations to better protect civilians and address emerging trends and challenges.
